Building and Leading High-Performing Design Teams at Tealium

The Business Challenge

To support Tealium’s company growth and movement to a Product led organization, they needed a design leader to formulate and execute design strategy that would support their business goals. Tealium needed to quickly scale its design, research and writing capabilities, as well as establish best practices and processes.

My Key Contributions

I was recruited and hired to establish the product design and research function at Tealium. By aligning design, writing, and research, I improved our customer experience with a user-centered holistic design approach that enhanced product usability and customer satisfaction. As a key member of the leadership team, I drove strategic initiatives, aligned design with product strategy, and contributed to year-over-year revenue growth.

I scaled and managed a high-performing design team, fostered cross-functional collaboration to solve complex business problems, and implemented efficient design processes. Starting with just three designers, I grew our diverse team to fourteen team members with skills in design, content writing, and research. I managed and mentored my team members and created a space for them to do their best work, resulting in multi-year retention of talent across all skills and enhancing both the quantity and quality of our work.

I established and implemented the design of Tealium’s platform-wide design system, increasing design consistency in our front-end UI and reducing time-to-market for new features. I established repeatable processes that increased efficiency and clarity in design workflows, while also leveraging usability testing and user research to adopt a data-driven approach in our decision making.

  • Was the leading voice to advocate and communicate UX and design strategy to stakeholders.

  • Owned tools and processes for design & research execution, documentation, and collaboration.

Establishing Design Vision

I established the design vision for the next phase of Tealium's Customer Data Hub platform, focusing on modernizing both the user interface and experience. The improvements were built on a new design system and informed by extensive user feedback and customer research. To communicate our vision and North Star, I led my team in creating a video that demonstrated our intended user experience enhancements and showcased the platform's more contemporary look and feel.
